Safer habits before you drive solo

The NSW Safer Drivers Course helps learner drivers build safer decision-making before they move on to their Ps. It covers hazard awareness, speed management, following distances and gap selection, the everyday road safety skills that matter most once you're driving without a supervisor.

For families in Wollongong and the Illawarra it can be a valuable step, and eligible learners earn 20 bonus log book hours on completion. Reggie is proud to instruct on Wollongong sessions hosted by Awesome Driving School.

For more on who can do the course and what each module covers, read the Safer Drivers Course explained.

What the course includes

The course has two modules, designed to improve safer driving behaviour before learners start driving alone.

  • A group workshop

A 3-hour facilitated session on the risks new drivers face and low-risk strategies to manage them.

  • A practical in-car session

A 2-hour drive with another learner and an instructor, putting the workshop into practice on real roads.

  • Hazard awareness

Recognising risks earlier and managing them in everyday driving.

  • Gap selection and following distance

Safer judgement around space, timing and road position.

  • 20 bonus log book hours

Eligible learners receive 20 hours of log book credit when they complete the course.

Who can do the course

NSW says you need a valid learner licence, to be under 25, and at least 50 on-road log book hours, not counting any 3-for-1 bonus hours.

  • Eligible learners under 25

You've logged 50 hours of on-road driving and want safer skills plus the bonus hours before your Ps.

  • Learners wanting safer road skills

Stronger judgement on speed, following distance, hazards and gaps.

  • Families planning the next step

Parents who want their learner to gain extra road safety knowledge before solo driving.
